Upcoming Changes to Google Workspace at Clemson

Estimated Reading Time: 2 Minutes

UPCOMING CHANGES TO GOOGLE WORKSPACE

Clemson will be transitioning away from using Clemson Google workspace. Gmail accounts will be going away soon starting in 2024 – and Google Drive storage will be limited.

CURRENT STUDENTS

New students will not get a g.clemson.edu Gmail account beginning in spring 2024.  They will use @clemson.edu email accounts with Microsoft Exchange via Outlook.

New students will get Clemson Google Workspace (without Gmail) with a cap on Google Drive storage.

CURRENT FACULTY AND STAFF

Current faculty and staff should begin to transition away from Clemson Gmail and set up their Exchange email accounts if they do not already have that done.

Current Faculty and Staff may continue to use other Clemson Google Workspace apps with an expectation that in the future, there may be a cap on Clemson Google storage.

FORMER STUDENTS (ALUMNI)

All Clemson graduates will get to keep their g.clemson.edu Gmail accounts for one year after graduation. At that point, their g.clemson.edu Gmail will no longer work.

Starting in early 2024, all Clemson alumni will no longer have access to other Clemson Google Workspace apps (such as Google Drive).

FORMER EMPLOYEES

Beginning in early 2024, former Clemson employees will no longer have access to Clemson Google Workspace (including Gmail, Google Drive, and other apps).

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO IF THIS AFFECTS YOU?

One solution is to create a new public Google account.

Gmail: You can then open your g.clemson.edu Gmail and use the Google Transfer app to transfer your Clemson Gmail to your public Gmail account.

Drive:  Keep in mind that public Google accounts have a limit on storage (currently 16 GB) and you might have a lot more in your Clemson Google Drive.  You can use the same Google Transfer app to transfer Google Drive data – but only do it if it is small.

Takeout: Another option is to use Google Takeout to download your Google Drive data into .zip files which you could access on your computer and decide whether to add to your new Drive account – or use with some other storage medium.
