Google Apps Limitations and Legal Issues

Some Google Apps are turned off on all g.clemson accounts due to License Agreements. These are only certain applications that fall under the License Agreement for our Google Apps for Education:  Calendar, Drive, Gmail, Groups for Business, and Sites.  Nothing else.  Clemson University is aware of the terms of service for any allowed applications. Users are subject to the Security and Privacy Policies of Google at large (which are different than GAE) which could potentially violate FERPA regulations.  Many of these individual Terms Of Services have “indemnification” clauses in them that the university (a state agency)  cannot agree to.

Another issue is that some applications mine the data in the accounts to create a better experience.  The Clemson legal department cannot allow users to do academic work in an unprotected cloud environment as academic work is FERPA protected.

Note: this includes YouTube. If you want to log in to YouTube, you will need to use a different Google Account (not your g.clemson.edu one).

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, but we simply cannot turn on other Google Apps at this time.
