Lecture Capture Transition

In Summer 2015 a taskforce composed of Echo 360 unit owners, CCIT, and Clemson Online was formed to evaluate our current lecture capture system. This task force created a list of requirements for the future of lecture capture. These requirements led to Clemson Online piloting MediaSite in the Fall of 2015. The MediaSite pilot was unsuccessful. At that time Echo360 was introducing their new Active Learning Platform. The Active Learning Platform was piloted in the Spring 2016 and Fall 2016 at Greenville One, Zucker, the Watt Center and in the Auditorium of Freeman Hall. During this time several system issues were identified and it was determined that the Echo 360 Active Learning Platform would not be a viable solution. Clemson was told by Echo 360 that the product we currently use would no longer be supported after May 2017. So Clemson Online and CCIT worked together with the Provost’s Office to determine a solution that would cause the least amount of impact to our customers due to the Canvas transition. Since Ensemble is our other media solution and many faculty/staff are already familiar with this system, we decided to expand on this solution and begin using the Ensemble Studio solution for lecture capture. We also have a large contingency of Camtasia users on our campus as well. In comparing the Echo 360 and Adobe Presenter, and Adobe Captivate licenses we realized these tools offered similar feature sets. So we decided to standardize on one platform. The new platform that we will use for personal capture will be Camtasia Studio. Camtasia Studio offers screen capture capabilities similar to Echo 360, Adobe Presenter and Captivate. However, it also offers editing capabilities that the other tools lacked. The files produced can be saved as MP4’s which offers more mobile compatibility and doesn’t require Flash for playback which was a limitation of the other tools. The flow of work will result in a direct integration with Canvas providing a better workflow for faculty and students.
